History exhibition


An exhibition on Hebraica and Judaica from Jews of Malabar, curated by Thoufeek Zakriya was organized with the immense support of Thaha Ibrahim, who takes care of Sarah Cohen and Mr. Rockey Neroth, owner of The Ethnic Passage.  Inputs from Elias Josephai, member of Ernakulam Jewish community and members of Jewish community of mattancherry made this exhibition a grand success.

Exhibition on the Jews of Malabar was opened at Sutra art gallery of The Ethnic Passage, a curio and souvenir shop in Mattancherry’s Jew Street, from December 1st to 10th of 2013. Inaugurated by Prof. M.G.S Narayanan by lighting a Hanukkiah (Jewish candelabrum lighted during Jewish festival of Hannukah) along with Dr. Essie Sassoon and Queenie Hallegua, members of Jewish community of Mattancherry. Other members of community were present for the event. Presence of Prof. Scaria Zacharia, Dr. C.K Ramachandran, V.K Bose, Dr. Peethambharan , Balachandran Chullikad made it really a memorable event.

Dr. Essie Sasson, a Jew born and brought up in Mattancherry but migrated to Israel in 1973, lights a lamp at an exhibition on the Jews of Malabar at The Ethnic Passage, Mattancherry on Sunday. Chef and Hebrew Calligrapher Thoufeek Zakriya, Jewish community member Queenie Hallegua, and Historian MGS Narayanan are also seen. An eight-day Jewish festival of lights, called Hanukkah, is also under way at the moment.

Members of the Jewish Community in Mattancherry appreciating a calligraphic replica of Torah prepared by Thoufeek Zakriya and displayed at an exhibition on Hebraica and Judiaca from the Jews of Malabar, which opened at Ethnic Passage, adjacent to the Paradesi Synagogue in Mattancherry, on Sunday. The exhibition, the first of its kind in Kerala, will be on till December 10. -
